Audience Research Focus Group

Ask three potential audience members. The focus must be on your design, not the idea for the film.
Write their responses below.
•          •         •          •            •             •          •         •          •            •          •
(only show the synopsis at this stage)
From reading the synopsis for the film, what genre of film do you think it is?  Please give reasons for your answer.

1.The genre sounds like a police/detective genre with scary bad guys and dark settings(warehouses).

2.It looks like a horror or police genre- Guns, fire, explosions, hostages.

3.I think this is a horror or a police action film with explosions and fire etc.

What impression do you get regarding the possible poster for the film? Think about what you would normally expect on a poster for this kind of film.

1.A poster with guns and action characters with big muscles

2.Fire and exploded cars with the main character stood alone

3.the antagonist's head and the good guys suspended above one of key locations

(show your designs now)
What are your first impressions of the DVD cover?  Please consider the following in your answer: Choice of image / choice of fonts / colour scheme used / page layout.

1.Involves bullets, action and addictions, the red and the darker colours make the theme scary and evil, the type is bold and makes it more generic.

2.Suspense and mysterious events are obvious. The action scenes and the guns appear and there is an image of a hostage situation. The front cover focuses on the main character’s addiction and immediately you already wander about the girl’s story and wonder whether the cigarette shes holding is a big part of the story.

3.The text makes the film seem more generic and scary. The images definitely suggest action and horror. The picture of the woman and the two men already gives you an idea of someone being kidnapped and the woman being depressed.

From your knowledge of the synopsis, do you think the poster drafts suit the film?  Please give reasons with regards to the designs.

1.Yes, the text makes it look like a police action film, the images make it look scary and suspensive.

2.The picture fits the plot of the girl with an addiction, the picture of the two men at the top shows a hostage situation like in the plot, the film clips represent action and extreme drama and it also shows a bit of a horror theme to add effect and more drama.

3.It is good, but more guns and explosions would make it look even more like an action film, as this looks more like a horror film.

Summary

In general the feedback is positive and the DVD Sleeve Draft matches the description/ synopsis of the film. Overall, The audience agreed that the conventions/ context matched the genre of my film, and after a suggestion that was made, I know that I need to include more guns and explosions to make my film more generic. Most of all the suggestions made, about what could be on the front cover, matched the images and text fonts that I used.

Playing With Naratives

Emily and the Dragon.
And with that, she and Matthew rode off together to Happy-Ever-After.
As Emily rode away, she was thinking about how her life had changed dramatically in one day. That morning Emily was just a normal boring princess  and by the end if the day she was riding away with her magical new price. She had a flashback of the day.
The day began with Emily looking out of her window of the castle over the kingdom, she was thinking about how all the wimpy princes try to kill the local dragon, but they never succeeded. She decided she would do it herself.  She began to make a plan on how to kill the dragon. The plan was perfect, all the she needed to do was pull the rope when the dragon was in place and she had got him. She begins to set up a trap, everything was in place and she was ready to go. Then the dragon appeared. It was a lot bigger than she expected and she was very shocked. So shocked she stepped back a few steps and stumbled down a well. She let out a loud scream. At the bottom of the well there were a big pile of leaves so Emily softly landed without harming her self.
"That's it" she said "My trap has been ruined, there's no way I can catch that dragon whilst I'm down here!" She had a vision of her growing old down the well, alone without a friend to talk to..
When suddenly she was snapped out of it, she heard a deep voice from the top of the well.
"Hello?" Emily looked up to see a figure of a young man, "You look like you need some help?"
Emily nodded shyly. You could tell this boy was a prince, but he wasn't like any other of the princes in the kingdom. This boy was a strong, big built prince, with gorgeous blonde hair and glimmering eyes. Emily hadn't seen a prince quite so fabulous.
The prince lowered down the bucket of which Emily climbed inside of. He pulled the bucket up to the top of the well and Emily fell into his arms, almost lost in her eyes, the prince placed Emily down and begins to stutter "I-I'm Matthew.. And what name do I use to address this beautiful woman stood in front of me?" Emily looks at the floor to try to disguise the fact her cheeks have turned pink from blushing, Matthew notices this and lets out a small giggle. Emily looks up "Emily," She says "M-my names Emily". She smiles at him.
"And what is a gorgeous girl like you doing down a well?" Emily turned around and pointed at the trap set up behind them. Matthew's jaw drops as he realises Emily's aim with the trap. "Would you.. Would you like some help? The local dragon.. Well he's awfully big". A grin spreads across Emily's face, finally, with the help of Matthew she'll be able to kill the dragon. She nods and leads him to the trap. They stand together as Emily explains the trap and they both wait for the dragon. It appears again. Still shocked of the size of the dragon, Emily shuffles back a little, but Matthew grabs her hand. "You can do this" He says. As soon as the dragon is in place, Emily and Matthew pull the rope and trap the dragon. "We got him!" Matthew shouts. Emily feels a shot of excitement stream across her body but then felt a big drop of guilt as she looked into the dragons eyes as it struggles. She didn't feel complete. Matthew see's this. "It doesn't feel right does it?"
He asks. She shakes her head, then looks at the dragon. "You're just a silly dragon, and even though it would be hardly worth it, I should toast you to a crisp and have you for pudding" She pauses "But I can't." She cuts the rope and releases the dragon, who doesn't move. The dragon owed Emily his life and it knew that. Matthew walks over to the dragon and begins to pet it. "You know, I heard dragons are great for transportation" He smiles "Should we head over to my castle in happily-ever-after?" Emily had fallen deeply in love with Matthew, and wasn't going to pass the opportunity "That'll do nicely" She says, and Matthew helps her onto the dragon.
And with that, she and Matthew rode off together to Happy-Ever-After.

Flashback(Just after the start and flashes back to the day just gone) As Emily rode away, she was thinking about how her life had changed dramatically in one day. That morning Emily was just a normal boring princess  and by the end if the day she was riding away with her magical new price. She had a flashback of the day. The day began with Emily looking out of her window...

Twist (Towards the middle of the story, the original plot of the story has been disturbed) - Everything was in place and she was ready to go. Then the dragon appeared. He was a lot bigger than she expected and she was very shocked. So shocked she stepped back a few steps and stumbled down a well.

Flashforward (Just after the problem,  she see's her whole life flash before her) - She had a vision of her growing old down the well, alone without a friend to talk to..

Parallel narrative
Emily's POV- Emily is sat in her room thinking about the local dragon and decides she is going to kill it. She spends time planning it and setting out the trap. It is all set up and ready to go, when suddenly, she falls down a well, when she hears a voice. She is lifted out of the well by a charming prince and together they trap the dragon, but in the end, they decided to let the dragon live, and they ride off to Happily-ever-after.

Matthew's POV- Matthew is sat in his castle in happily-ever-after polishing his armed and sword. Today Matthew decided he wanted to stroll across the kingdom, and through the forest to see the beautiful sights. As he was walking through, he heard a scream. A scream of a young lady. He walks towards the scream and finds a beautiful princess down a well. He helps her up and see's the trap. He helps her catch the dragon, which they later set free. Matthew asks the princess to come back to the castle, and they ride off the Happily-ever-after.

Equilibrium

1.  Read the mini-saga and complete the grid below.

Emily and the Dragon.
Emily was tired of watching wimpy princes trying to get rid of the local dragon, so she decided to have a go herself. Soon she came upon the dragon who was singeing the top of a freckle-faced boy's head.
Being a resourceful princess, Emily set a trap for the dragon and then tricked him into following her..
"You're just a silly girl, and even though it's hardly worth it, i'm going to toast you to a crisp and have you for pudding' boomed the dragon. Just then, the branches he was standing on gave way, and he fell down a very deep well, his fire put out once and for all.
Emily returned to the boy.
'What's your name?' she asked.
'Prince Mathew' said the boy.
'That'll do nicely,' said Emily. 'Where do you live?'
'In Happy-Ever-After,' he replied.
'That'll do nicely too,' said Emily.
And with that, she and Matthew rode off together to Happy-Ever-After.
